If we want to fulfil the energy requirements of our country, we have to look at cleaner fossil fuels for the next 20 years, at least which becomes a part of energy transition. Therefore, natural gas has to play a much larger role and can be transported easily for use in industry, CNG for transport, cooking and for commercial purposes. This is the reason why we have this target of taking natural gas in the primary energy needs from current 6.7% to 15%, which may even go higher beyond 2030.
All over the world, Governments are giving parallel thrust to increase the share of unconventional energy in their energy requirements. In this challenging time, the potential of the redevelopment of mature oil and gas fields, which was often overlooked is the game changer for industry.
Reducing carbon footprint definitely is a talk of the town talk of the countries with the net zero given as a deadline by almost all the companies, not only the companies but the nations and Cop 26 just around the corner. the oil and gas industry is expected to look towards more greener solutions and move forward in their pursuit because oil and gas is going to be there if not at that level in a global context, but definitely at a much larger level in Indian context.

We have a commitment to keep carbon emissions under control. The gas imports, which were in the range of almost 20% in 2010, has I believe increased to close to 50% now. And with the LNG here, gas has become available everywhere in any part of the world. Gas is now being treated and available here in India. Also the new results which we have found, the new finds which are there are more on gas and we expect to increase our domestic gas production.
There are three major opportunity to reduce energy consumption per unit of output, One, is to utilize the combination of use of technology, better efficiency, cost analysis that should help reduce consumption to attain cleaner technology like solar, hydro, nuclear which needs to commercialize. Second, we need to produce reasonable and affordable energy to drive the implementation of the projects on time bound manner to reap benefits,
Third, how to pursue latest technologies like green hydrogen, coal to chemicals, bottom of the barrel technologies like extracting more value on how to adopt, embrace and rapidly utilize the combination to get affordability.
If you look at all the projections for the next two to three decades, you clearly see that the major focus of growth in energy demand globally is the Indian subcontinent is basically India because of the growth factor and the corresponding energy consumption factor, per capita energy consumption going up and growth picking up. So the two issues really are intertwined for us. That is point number one. Point number two is that for us in India, the economic growth and the energy growth is not incompatible with growth in oil and gas.
PM has announced on 15th August 2047 when India will celebrate 100 years of independence, we must be energy independent also. In this context how do we transit fossil fuel to the modern form of energy. Hydrogen will be a very crucial piece of entire puzzle. We are already focusing on natural gas and after 11th round of bidding for city gas distribution, the infrastructure we are able to reach to the remote corners of the country and trying to reach 95% of population. With the availability of gas infrastructure already in place, the transition from natural gas to up to 20% hydrogen will be much easier.
